Ral 100 Space Centre

During May 2014 BTS Fabrications were contacted by LSC Facades with regards to the rainscreen system for the RAL 100 Space Technology Centre in Harwell, Oxford. RAL Space are part of the STFC (Science and Technology Facilities Council) and are at the forefront of UK Space Research.

The new building will be home to the UK’s largest and most sophisticated space design, production and research facilities and is an extension to the existing laboratory. The brief for architects Fairhursts Design Group was that the design was to be influenced by the theme of outer space in its colour scheme and the materials used.

BTS Fabrications flagship Vantage® DF Engineered Rainscreen systems, as well as a wide array of fabrications were used on the project. Spectra Metallic Gold in Alucobond was used. This finish is the first and only colour in the UK. The stark sharp, angular lines and gold curved fascia act as the perfect foil, giving a really futuristic feel to this design concept. Originally Alucobond was specified on all the job but in addition to the gold, powder coated Vantage® DF panels in the grey and blue were used as cost savers to value engineer the job to within budget.
