Four senior members of the BTS leadership team recently took time out of their working day to visit their former primary school.
Cleves Cross Primary School in Ferryhil, County Durham, hosted a careers day for Year 5 and Year 6 children, and Claire Orton, Admin Manager, Nigel Freeman, Operations Director, Marcia Atkinson, Finance Director and Phil Atkinson, Managing Director were all delighted to attend.
In fact, Marcia, Philip and Nigel were in the first ever class in 1972, making the experience a real trip down memory lane.
The careers event acted much like ‘speed-dating’, where groups of children would rotate around experts from different career fields, including the police, the army and even British Airways. The children were encouraged to ask a range of questions, with the best queries being rewarded with a sticker
Phil Atkinson said, “The kids were brilliant. We started by asking them what they wanted to be, we received answers like football player, and even Astro Nuclear physicist!
“After describing what we did at BTS we received some great questions, my favourite was ‘what inspired you to get where you are now?’
“My answer was a great education at this exact school and my father.”
The four leaders spent three hours chatting to the students, before having a tour of the facility and an opportunity to meet some of the teachers.
Phil continues, “It was brilliant to reminisce and remember my happy days at school. It’s ironic that I also went to school there with my future wife-to-be.”
The whole team proposed to return the favour and invite the children for a factory tour, as well as keep in regular contact with the students.
The thanks letter from Cleves Cross School takes pride of place in our reception area with our other accolades.
