Training future rainscreen fabricators
At BTS, we take pride in everything we do, from our rainscreen and facade products to our bespoke fabrications and system-based solutions – that’s why we want to share our expertise.
For seven years, we have worked closely with The Employability Trust, a north east charity which aims to tackle unemployment by enabling young people to gain valuable work experience in the engineering and manufacturing field.
The programme aims to give trainees the skills they need to secure a full-time position within the industry, and that’s where businesses like us come in…
Putting the S into ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance)
If you haven’t heard already, we’re striving to become a B Corp certified company, an accreditation which verifies we meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability – essentially, we want to be a great company to work for.
But, the ‘social’ aspect of ESG doesn’t just mean looking after people within the walls of our company, it also means doing what we can to support our community.
That’s why we love working alongside The Employability Trust, as it gives us an opportunity to support, inspire and train a variety of people in our area who are struggling to secure work.

A day in the life Wondering what happens when we invite Employability Trust candidates to our facility in Newton Aycliffe? Well, it’s much like every other day. We like our trainees to become fully immersed in the hustle and bustle of our factory floor, with support and guidance of our team leaders, Bradley Wright and John Simmonds. While at BTS, trainees have the opportunity to develop skills in:
- Stud welding (five days training)
- Operating punch machine (eight weeks training)
- Product assembly and packing (three weeks training)
- Press operating (10 weeks training)
But, trainees don’t only take vital practical skills away with them, they’ll gain valuable experience in working in a team, KPIs and working life disciplines. It’s extremely rewarding to see BTS pupils develop and flourish within the working environment, but also, it’s great for us as it’s an extra set of hands to help our existing team.Don’t just take it from us We think our partnership with The Employability Trust is fantastic, but don’t just take it from us, take it from the people who have benefitted from it… “Everyone who works at BTS is easy to get along with and they’re always helpful if I need advice or support. I love being able to try out a variety of different types of work, I love learning about the different types of machines they have too. It’s great not being micro-managed, but I’m able to ask any questions if I need to. I really enjoyed working for BTS and I’m thankful for the opportunity.” – Ross Hopper. “I love being able to try out a different range of jobs, everyone is really helpful and are always willing to help. The team leaders are great, they are always willing to offer a hand and point me in the right direction. During my time here I have been treated like one of their own.” – Liam Rogers. So, if you’re a business in the North East looking to support those in your local area, we’d strongly urge you to get in touch with the team at The Employability Trust – it’s an extremely rewarding initiative.
