A day in the life of a welder fabricator at a north east facades company.

When it comes to the world of facades and fabrications, each day is packed with hustle and bustle, as the BTS team juggle and manage high-cost projects which are manufactured for buildings across the country.

Each member of the team plays an integral part in ensuring business runs smoothly, that includes Chris Mattison, a welder fabricator at BTS.

He’s been a part of the BTS family for five fantastic years, and recently passed his Cities & Guilds in Welding – we can’t wait to see how his career progresses with us in future.

During his time here, he’s also experienced the shift from our 40-hour week to our 37-hour week, the first of many steps we’re making towards the four-day working week.

So, what does he get up to? And how does he make sure he completes his work in condensed hours? Well, let’s take a look at what he gets up to on a daily basis…

6am

Chris starts his day at around 6am, brushes his teeth, gets dressed and quickly tends to his family before making the hour-long journey into Aycliffe.

Before his shift starts, he needs some fuel to keep him going throughout the day. So, he makes his daily pit-stop at a local café to grab his favourite breakfast: a sausage sandwich.

With what sauce, we hear you ask? Well, it’s got to be tomato, hasn’t it? After a tasty on-the-go breakfast, and doing his bit to support a local business, Chris arrives at BTS at 7:50am to start his shift.

But first, he treats himself to a strong cup of tea before setting to a day of work.

8am

First things first, Chris likes to ensure his workstation is clean and tidy ready for the day. Once he’s sure everything is spic and span and he has all the materials he needs, he heads on over to the daily brief.

At the start of each day, our operations team meet to outline weekly business performance. Here, Chris will given his work for the day, where he’ll also be made aware of KPIs and targets that need to be hit.

10am

On Tuesdays, Chris and his wider team each meet up for a weekly briefing. It’s one of Chris’ favourite meetings, as he’s able to see pictures from the projects he has physically made the materials for – who doesn’t love a progress picture?!

Nigel Freeman, our operations director, will also keep the team updated in terms of hitting target for each week, and will offer help and guidance to those who need it.

11am

Once Chris understands the projects he’s taking on for that day, he gets right to work on carefully welding and crafting our bespoke range of products.

He’ll use information sent over from design to ensure each product he’s working on is manufactured with precision.

12pm

By lunchtime, Chris has certainly built up an appetite! Creating architectural masterpieces is thirsty work, you know?!

But he’s quite easy-going when it comes to lunch – whether it’s last night’s leftovers, a filling pastry from Greggs or a meal deal – Chris isn’t fussy, as long as his lunch fills a hole!

12.30pm

For the duration of the afternoon, Chris will focus on ensuring all his dedicated tasks are completed. If they aren’t, he isn’t shy of staying behind to make sure the job gets done – his hard work never goes unnoticed.

If everything is on track, Chris will spend some time on working on a handover for the person taking over on the following shift, so they are in-the-know with priorities and tasks for the duration of the day.

4.30pm

If Chris works the usual day shift, his day will finish around half past four.

Chris prefers an early start, as it means he gets to head home and spend time with his family, but, being easy-going, he’s flexible to help out when business calls.

On a Friday, however, Chris is now allowed to head off at lunchtime, so he’s able to spend all-important time with his family and friends and enjoy an enhanced work-life balance.

5.30pm

After making the journey home, Chris likes to enjoy a spot of dinner, spend time with his family and switch on the TV to watch Formula 1 – sounds like the perfect way to unwind after a busy day.
